Environment, settlement and economy in the Alpine Middle Ages: the case of Piuro and the Bregaglia valley

Abstract: In this talk, we will present new data from the archaeological excavation of the medieval village of Piuro (6th-15th century) and the survey in Val Bregaglia. In this way, we will reconstruct the settlement, the economy and the exploitation of raw materials (soapstone) of a significant Alpine valley that linked Italy to Switzerland. The study of palaeoenvironmental remains (seeds, charcoals, pollens) will also allow the reconstruction of the environment and the anthropic landscape form during the Middle Ages.
