The European Ph.D. Network in Philosophy is a joint program designed to promote scientific excellence, foster internationalization of doctoral education, and enhance students’ career prospects. It includes the Universities of Bergen, Bielefeld, Bologna, Helsinki, Utrecht, and Uppsala.
Its main objectives are:

to facilitate international co-supervision and award binational or national degrees under the Cotutelle agreement or the Agreement on Educational Cooperation;

to provide a structured international curriculum including a 3–9 month stay abroad;
to integrate students into national and international academic communities, establishing lasting networks with supervisors and peers;
to acquaint them with advanced theories, methods, and approaches in contemporary philosophy;
to offer multiple formats for feedback and dialogue;
to closely monitor thesis progress through regular supervision;
to encourage early independent research, publications, and conference participation;
to provide training in teaching, professional, and practical skills;
to offer career coaching in the final study phase;
to foster supervisors’ skills and best practices across institutions.

A distinctive strength of the Ph.D. Net is its integration of students into the research process from the very beginning. Research training is designed with the full process in mind, and the program’s hallmark is international co-supervision. The teaching strategy emphasizes close, continuous monitoring. Central to the program are biannual working seminars, where students present progress reports and chapter drafts. These drafts are discussed in depth, with feedback from supervisors and peers. Alongside the seminars, short master classes and workshops on topical philosophical issues may be offered, hosted by the staff of the university where the seminar takes place. This ensures the integration of permanent faculty into the network’s activities and enhances students’ exposure to diverse scholarly perspectives.
Overall, the European Ph.D. Network in Philosophy combines mobility, joint supervision, advanced training, and collaborative research environments, offering doctoral candidates a unique and comprehensive framework for international scholarly development.
