Trashware | Give a new life to your computer

The recovery and reuse service for discarded PCs is offered by the student association S.P.R.I.Te. on the Cesena Campus.

The term trashware refers to the practice of recovering computers destined for the rubbish tip and making them functional again in order to donate them to entities that express a need for them.

Recovery involves assembling a fully functional machine by combining components from two or more PCs. Once the hardware has been checked, the Linux operating system is installed to obtain a new machine that is fully functional and suitable for the needs of numerous applicants, including schools, associations and private individuals.

The three key principles of the project are:

  • Respect the environment: many PCs are discarded because they are considered obsolete, but for numerous organisations and individuals they may still be useful and all that hardware would otherwise end up being disposed of unnecessarily, causing significant damage to the environment.
  • Help those in need: many organisations and individuals do not have the means to buy a new computer, but through the Trashware project anyone can request a PC that they would otherwise be unable to afford.
  • Enhance the organisational capacity of university students: the project is led by members of the S.P.R.I.Te. Association, who are university students predominantly enrolled on the Engineering and Computer Science degree programme in Cesena.

The project is implemented by the student association S.P.R.I.Te., which stands for “Studenti Polo Romagnolo in Informatica e Tecnologie”, in agreement with: Municipality of Cesena, Hera S.p.A., University of Bologna, Cesena Campus.
