Baby Pit Stop

A space equipped for infants and their parents.

GOAL

The University of Bologna intends to implement the "Directive of the Minister for simplification and public administration regarding conduct and acts of public administrations pursuant to art. 1, paragraph 2, of Legislative Decree 165/2001, impediments to breastfeeding", no. 1 of 2017, which expressly refers to EU Directive 2006/141/EC of the European Commission (22/12/2006) in the part concerning the principle of promoting and protecting breastfeeding and the need to avoid discouraging the practice, including by curbing behaviours that clearly impede it. The initiative is based on the similar UNICEF project and is targeted at local bodies. The concept involves “Baby Pit Stops”, where babies can be breastfed and have their nappy changed.

ACTIVITIES

On 14 October, the University’s first Baby Pit Stop was opened at the university offices in Via Andreatta 4 in Bologna, on the ground floor in accordance with environmental requirements and the minimum requirements suggested by UNICEF. The room, adjacent to one of the most recent study rooms made available to students, has been appropriately equipped to ensure the best possible conditions. New mothers, University staff, and students and their families have a furnished space equipped with everything they need breastfeed or change their child’s nappy in comfort, including: changing table, sink, bottle warmer, small play area for older siblings and a waiting corner for carers. Other spaces are being designed to give continuity to the project, including in the Romagna Campuses.

HOW TO ACCESS

The Baby Pit Stop is accessible: from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 to 19:00 and on Saturdays from 8:30 to 13:00.

To access, users must ring the bell and the SPISA concierge (to which the intercom and a camera system of the building in via Belmeloro 8/2 is connected) allows access.
