Fundamentals of Design of Experiment and Analysis of Variance. Possible applications in many research studies ranging from engineering to several other fields.

Programma/Contenuti

Scenarios, where some factors are likely to affect an observed outcome, may occur in several fields and even in everyday life. For instance, it is very common to face situations, when we wonder how the arrival time may affect the probability of finding a good parking. A fisher may wonder if the bait type he is using could have an impact on the number of caught fishes and their sizes. In engineering, different design strategies, entailing different shape, geometry and mechanical treatments may affect the achievable strength of a joint. Moving to further fields, the concept of “interaction” is widely used in medicine, pharmacology and marketing. In some humanistic studies, in the framework of linguistic research, we may wonder if the frequency regarding the occurrence of a word may be influenced by gender or cultural level. In addition, a further question may deal with the factors affecting the correct comprehension of a pictogram aimed at replacing the commonly used textual medical instructions regarding drug dosage and diseases to be treated. This course it split into two parts. The first one will be devoted to some fundamentals of Design of Experiment and Analysis of Variance. Afterwards, several applications will be presented in the second part of the course, addressing multidisciplinary research studies ranging from engineering to several other fields.

Metodi didattici

Lectures with slide projection. Comments of scientific papers.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

The final test will consist in the arrangement of a PowerPoint presentation, dealing with a deepening of the course topics, to be defended in front of the professor. This presentation must comprise at least 4 slides and be prepared by any single student or even a group of students cooperating together. In the latter case, the length must be of at least 4 slides per student; moreover, the contribution by each must be clearly acknowledgeable. The presentation must be forwarded to the professor in advance (at least one day before the test) and needs to be written and discussed in the same language of the course (i.e. in English).

Topic of the exam: working in groups (recommended size: 4-5 people per group), design your own experiment based on your everyday life, personal interests, or what you are currently studying. Run the experiment, collect and process the results, and draw your conclusions. Techniques concerned with 1-factor or 2-factor analysis should be applied.
