Il Collegio incontra... George Malliaras

Discover the latest developments in bioelectronic medicine and its potential to revolutionize healthcare with Prof. George Malliaras from the University of Cambridge.

  • Date: 20 MARCH 2023  from 16:00 to 18:00

  • Event location: Aula Giorgio Prodi - Piazza San Giovanni in Monte 2 - Bologna - In presence and online event

From the work of Galvani emerged bioelectronic medicine, which provides a novel approach to treating diseases through the electrical stimulation of tissues. For instance, deep brain stimulation has shown remarkable potential in addressing neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, while the stimulation of peripheral nerves is being investigated as a possible treatment for autoimmune disorders. A key challenge in bringing these technologies to patients at scale is establishing stable and efficient interfaces between electronics and the human body. This can be achieved by using new electronic materials and devices designed to communicate with the body and evolve with it.

George Malliaras, Prince Philip Professor of Technology at the University of Cambridge, leads the Bioelectronics Laboratory, an interdisciplinary group of scientists, engineers and clinicians who translate advances in electronics to better tools for healthcare. His research has been recognised with awards from the New York Academy of Sciences, the US National Science Foundation, DuPont, and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Linköping in Sweden. He is a Fellow of the Materials Research Society and of the Royal Society of Chemistry and serves as Deputy Editor of Science Advances.

The conference will take place in English.
