Palazzo Archiginnasio is one of the most significant buildings in Bologna. It was built by Cardinal Borromeo between 1562 and 1563 to a design by architect Antonio Morandi. It was the main seat of the University until 1803.

Previously known as Aula magna dei Legisti (=law students), the Stabat Mater lecture room is named after the first Italian performance of the liturgical sequence in music, held on 18 March 1842, of Gioachino Rossini's Stabat Mater, conducted by Gaetano Donizetti.
