At the Laboratory for Multilectal Mediated Communication & Cognition (MC2 Lab) we are trying to describe, understand, and explain cognitive processes of participants in communicative events where more than one language variety is used and a mediator helps the other parties to (better) understand each other.
We aim to flesh out a 4EA cognitive framework to account for the mental processes of people involved in mediated communication tasks, which we have unimaginatively dubbed Cognitive Translatology. In order to do so, we are working hard to learn in areas such as attention, conscious and automated behavior, multitasking, mental workload, and expertise. The bilingual mental lexicon, fuzzy problem solving, HCI, implicit beliefs, naturalistic decision-making under uncertainty, and self-regulation are other research areas we dive in.
