SCALA Spring Seminar 2025 – LUMEN Project and SCALA Center Event

We are pleased to announce the "SCALA Spring Seminar 2025 – LUMEN Event," featuring a presentation by Prof. Olga Ulturgasheva, Associate Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Social Anthropology at Manchester University, organized in collaboration with the SCALA, Social and Cultural Anthropology Lab, research center at the University of Bologna.

🌟 Title: “On More-Than-Human Dimension of Research Collaborations and Nyamnin”

Abstract: Environmental crises in Arctic regions require a synergy of scientific and Indigenous knowledge to safeguard human and more-than-human lives. The presentation will explore collaborative strategies to address climate-induced threats, inspired by the Indigenous principle of nyamnin. It will promote a symmetrical and reciprocal approach that recognizes the plurality of connections and the importance of non-human worlds.

Short Biography:
Olga Ulturgasheva is a Senior Lecturer in Social Anthropology who has conducted research on human/non-human personhood, childhood, youth, and adaptation to climate change in Siberia, the American Arctic, and Amazonia. Her notable publications include Narrating the Future in Siberia and the co-edited volumes Animism in Rainforest and Tundra and Risky Futures. She has led interdisciplinary projects on Arctic Indigenous youth resilience funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and is currently Principal Investigator on projects supported by the NSF and the European Research Council (ERC). From 2021 to 2022, she served as a Pathy Visiting Professor at Princeton University and is currently a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Her current research focuses on the security of non-human worlds and the co-production of knowledge in the age of climate change.

At 11:00 AM on the same day, before the seminar, there will be an Anthro Café event at Grinder Coffee Lab (Via di Roma, Ravenna), featuring the seminar’s organizers, Olga Ulturgasheva and Sayan Ulturgashev, a professional ballet dancer. Sayan will enrich the morning with a performative and reflective intervention exploring the connections between art, body, and nature in Indigenous cultures.

Sustainability in the Agri-Food System

Experiences and Models for Enhancing Cultural and Territorial Heritage

University of Trieste, April 11, 2025

 

The UNITS Research Unit will host a new LUMEN seminar on "Sustainability in the Agri-Food System: Experiences and Models for Enhancing Cultural and Territorial Heritage" on April 11, 2025, at the University of Trieste. The event will be scientifically coordinated by Professor Serena Baldin, with the participation of other members of the research unit. Among the speakers, Veronica Federico from the UNIFI Research Unit will also participate, chairing the discussion panel.

The agri-food sector is among the most affected by the climate crisis and is expected to face increasing adverse effects. The aim of this seminar is to analyze agri-food sustainability from different perspectives, including food security, biodiversity, agroecology, and the conservation of traditional seeds, through contributions from experts in various disciplines. This seminar will provide a platform for discussion to define experiences and models related to the most appropriate social and legal responses to ensure sustainability in the agri-food system while also focusing on enhancing cultural and territorial heritage.

The event will begin with a presentation of the PRIN PNNR 2022 LUMEN project by Professor Serena Baldin (University of Trieste), followed by an introduction to the CLIMAVORE x Jameel at RCA project, a LUMEN partner, by Dr. Enrico Milazzo (Royal College of Art, London). The seminar will feature several speakers, including Serena Baldin (UNITS), Stefano Fabian (Friuli Venezia Giulia Region), Antonella Picinelli (Slow Food Trieste), Maurizio Tondolo (Ecomuseum of the Waters of Gemonese), Moreno Zago (University of Trieste), Roberto Louvin (UNITS), Enrico Milazzo (CLIMAVORE, London), and Silvia Zanini (UNITS).

The event is part of the broader collaboration between the LUMEN project and the CLIMAVORE project – Building Regenerative Food Networks in the Climate Emergency, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary approaches in addressing challenges related to agri-food sustainability.

Animals in Comparative and European Public Law

LUMEN Supplementary Course on the Role of Animals in Modern Law Between Constitutions, European Regulations, and International Case Studies – January 30 / February 20, 2025

The Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Trieste, LUMEN partner, presents the supplementary course Animals in Comparative and European Public Law, led by Dr. Silvia Zanini, research fellow in Comparative Public Law at the University of Trieste. The course, lasting 15 hours, will take place in person from January 30 to February 20, 2025, addressing current and interdisciplinary themes related to the relationship between law and animals.

Each session will explore key topics such as the historical evolution of the concept of animal welfare, the inclusion of animals in national constitutions, and the analysis of European regulations on ritual slaughter, food labeling, and wildlife management. Through comparative analysis and international case studies, students will gain insights into how public law addresses the challenges surrounding animals and their protection.

Attendance of at least 60% of the scheduled hours will grant recognition of TAF F credits, with the opportunity to obtain 0.5 additional credits by completing a final exam. For details regarding the schedule and classroom location, please refer to the official website of the Department.

Interview-Seminar with Ramiro Ávila Santamaría: Legal Personhood of Rivers and Ecosystems

On November 21, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the University of Bologna (Room Romei, via Bersaglieri 6) will host an interview-seminar with Prof. Ramiro Ávila Santamaría, former judge of the Constitutional Court of Ecuador and renowned for his work on the legal personhood of rivers and ecosystems.

The event is organized as part of the LUMEN project, coordinated by Silvia Bagni, LUMEN project coordinator, Amilcare D’Andrea, member of the UNIBO research unit,  and Valentina Capuozzo, a research fellow at the University of Bologna.

This seminar follows the first LUMEN conference, which will be held in Florence on November 19-20, where Prof. Ávila Santamaría will be a featured guest speaker. This is a unique opportunity to explore the rights of nature and delve into innovative legal practices on an international level.

Two-Day Workshop on Legal Drafting Techniques for the Creation of a 'Model' Law on the Rights of Nature

The University of Trieste, Department of Political and Social Sciences, is organizing a two-day workshop on legal drafting techniques for the creation of a 'model' law on the rights of nature. The event will take place on November 11, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and on November 12, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, in Room 420, 4th Floor, Building A, at the University of Trieste.

The seminar will be introduced by Prof. Serena Baldin, Associate Professor of Comparative Public Law at the University of Trieste, who will give a presentation on the circulation of the rights of nature from Latin America to Europe. Following this, there will be a practical workshop on drafting a 'model' law on the rights of nature, with active participation from all attendees. The event is an integral part of the LUMEN project.

Applying the Ecosystem Approach to Rethink Environmental Jurisprudence

LUMEN Webinar organized by the University of Trieste on October 25, 2024

A new LUMEN webinar titled "Applying the Ecosystem Approach to Rethink Environmental Jurisprudence" will be held online on Friday, October 25, 2024, at 3:00 PM CEST.

The seminar is under the scientific direction of Prof. Serena Baldin from the University of Trieste, who will introduce the event. Dr. Silvia Zanini, a member of the research unit and research fellow in comparative public law at the same university, will present on "Wild Law and the Ecosystem Approach." Following this, a workshop will take place, focusing on the review and rewriting of three legal rulings using an ecosystem-based perspective, with active participation from the attendees.

The new internal seminar on "Rights of Nature and Solidarity Duties," organized as part of the LUMEN project, will take place on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. The event will be introduced by Prof. Serena Baldin from the University of Trieste, with contributions from Prof. Roberto Louvin, Prof. Pasquale Viola, Dr. Silvia Zanini, and Dr. Paolo Pinto, all from the University of Trieste. The scientific organization is curated by Prof. Serena Baldin and Dr. Silvia Zanini.

The ecosystem approach

The Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Trieste, partner of the Lumen project, organizes a seminar on "Rewriting sentences in an ecocentric perspective. From environmental law to ecological law" (Ita) on April 17, 2024. The seminar will host the following speeches and activities:
