From June 16 to 24, 2025, Melanie Jean Murcott, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Cape Town, will be a visiting professor in Florence as part of the LUMEN project.

The research unit of the University of Florence is pleased to welcome Professor Melanie Jean Murcott as a LUMEN Visiting Scholar from June 16 to 24, 2025. Associate Professor of Law at the University of Cape Town, Prof. Murcott has built a distinguished academic and professional career in the fields of constitutional and environmental law.
During her stay in Florence, on June 19, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, she will deliver a LUMEN seminar titled “Transformative Environmental Constitutionalism in Africa, focusing on the role of courts in the socio-ecological crisis of the Anthropocene.
Prof. Murcott will also deliver another seminar on "Transformative Environmental Constitutionalism in Africa" in advance on June 17, 2025, from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM, organized by the Department of Legal Sciences and the Florence Research Unit.
Finally, another LUMEN seminar led by Prof. Murcott is scheduled for June 23, 2025, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, focusing on "Entwined Fates: Rethinking Nature and Humanity in African Landscapes."
Author of the monograph Transformative Environmental Constitutionalism (Brill, 2022), Melanie Murcott offers an innovative approach to the constitutional adjudication of environmental issues, centering justice and freedom as fundamentally interconnected between humans and the environment.
