Are sport and religion resources for the social integration of immigrants?

A round table at University of Bologna - Rimini Campus to discuss how sports and religion can be emerging practices of an inclusive culture.

Italy has been a frontier territory for migrants and asylum seekers for several decades. The frequent arrivals at Italian shores of people from different ethnic and religious origins today have transformed the "Bel Paese" into a "multicultural society" in progress. This is a big challenge for the European Union and for Italy; and this Country has become the "Gate of Europe" and therefore a "transit Country" for migrants and asylum seekers; but, following the refusal to accept them even recently from Austria and other Eastern European countries, Italy could also become an endpoint.

As emerging from the 21st Report on Migration of the ISMU, it is plausible to think that the migration phenomenon in Italy is in continuous growth and transformation, so much to be able to speak of a new cycle characterized by a notable increase in migratory flows and by an increasingly visible presence of refugees from theaters of war in the nearby Middle East. Hosting just over 5 million foreign residents (8.2% of Italians) our country has entered the "head" patrol of European nations by absolute number of immigrants (IDOS 2015). It is therefore not too early to start questioning how to integrate migrants and asylum seekers; we need to go beyond the material aspects and ask ourselves about the socio-cultural aspects that can be positive, based on the first studies carried out in Europe, in order to favor the integration in our country of these new actors of global civil society.

The round table has been held on Thursday 6 April 2018 (2 pm - 4 pm) at the University Campus of Rimini (classroom "Teatini 1", p.zza Teatini 10, a few steps from the Malatesta Temple); it explored some socio-cultural practices, which can facilitate the integration of migrants and asylum seekers into everyday life. Mainly the speakers dibated whether sport and religion are powerful resources for the social integration of migrants and refugees, and whether they offer opportunities for encounters among natives and immigrants or, on the contrary, if they build walls and barriers.

The meeting will be attended by: Nicola Porro (Professor of General Sociology at University of Cassino and Southern Lazio); Stefano Martelli (Professor of Sociology of Cultural Processes, University of Bologna "Alma Mater Studiorum"); Giovanna Russo (University of Bologna "AMS" and curator of Sport and immigration dossier); Elisabetta Degli Esposti Merli (magazine "Africa e Mediterraneo", publisher Lai-momo - Sasso Marconi - Bologna); Luciano Marzi (manager of the "immigration" sections fort the Caritas in Dioceses of Rimini). The round table was organized for the students of Master's Degree Courses in Education and Sport Science.

Concepts and numbers for sport

Sociology and statistics to understand and organize a great social phenomenon

Over 36 million Italians practice one or more sports, or simply run, swim, ride bicycles practice fitness or seek wellness with a better balance between mind and body: Istat data punctually document the many faces of one of the greatest social phenomena everyday, yet in the media there is only talk of a few sports and very few highly salaried professionals. How to explain this elitist reduction that transforms a playful and popular practice into a battle between teams? How to document the link between mega-sports events and the development of the territory that hosts them? how to broaden the gaze to grasp the future of many sports and the growing variety of physical activities?

The round table will try to answer these and other questions on: Concepts and numbers for sport. Sociology and statistics to understand and organize a great social phenomenon. The event, scheduled for Friday, October 20, 2017 at 9-11 am in the 1-2 classrooms of the former Faculty of Pharmacy (via San Donato 19/2 - Bologna), is part of the events that are taking place throughout the country. performing on the occasion of the Week of Sociology, and also that day on the 91st anniversary of the institution of Istat.
