Following the project started in 2022, during the September 2024 campaign the team of the Butrint Project was involved in a new series of fieldwalking and topographic surveys in the area of southern Albania.
As part of the PRIN 2022 FortNet Project, the area between the Porto Palermo bay and the archaeological site of Borsh was one of the main focus of this year's activities. Already visited and investigated extensively the previous year, Badhra and Kukum were again surveyed during the 2024 campaign so as to finish the photogrammetric survey for the entire extent of the hills and thus complete the documentation on these sites. The Muzga site, known for the presence of a so-called fortified villa, was again visited and for the first time covered by a photogrammetric survey using a drone and GNSS antenna in RTK mode, as well as extensive photographic documentation. Similarly, the Hundesova site near the village of Lukova and the site of Borsh were surveyed for the first time by drone in order to undertake a new, more in-depth study.
The Pavlla Valley was also once again surveyed by surface survey and topographical survey. Fieldwalking and drone survey of the structure and surroundings of the so-called fortified villa of Metoq, near Saranda, now part of the urban fabric of the city, was undertaken. At the same time, the site of the so-called Dema wall, along the northern shore of Lake Butrint, and Kalivo, along the southern shore of the lake, were also surveyed by drone in order to obtain a photogrammetric model to ease the study of these sites in the broader territorial context.
Both fieldwork campaigns were also made possible thanks to the support and participation to the PRIN 2022 FortNet Project.
