Conference part of the international workshop "Architectures and building techniques of the ancient theatres and amphitheatres in Adriatic area" organised by the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua and the Centro Studi per l'Archeologia dell'Adriatico
Date: 15 DECEMBER 2023 from 16:50 to 17:10
Event location: Sala Sartori, Palazzo Liviano, Piazza Capitaniato 7, Padova
The study seminar intends to focus attention on aspects of entertainment buildings, though without neglecting the urban and functional framework related to them, welcoming critical review of previous research or outcomes of new investigations on theaters and amphitheaters of the regions facing both sides of the Adriatic Sea. In these territories marked by even very different protohistoric cultural traditions, traits of pervasive diffusion of Greek culture from the Hellenistic age onwards are grasped, merging and blending with the later distinctly Roman historical-architectural horizon.
Within this framework, interventions devoted to theaters and amphitheaters of the Adriatic area addressed to one or more of the following themes will be compared: the relationship with the morphological and environmental framework, architectural aspects, design solutions, dimensional and metrological features, relations of the structural framework with the literary and source tradition, construction systems, site practices, materials used, and characters and materials for decoration.
