Over the last few decades, the sea, lagoons, and coastal landscapes have been topics of research developed by different disciplines, ranging from those with a more scientific and applied matrix to those with a humanistic and design vocation. However, these topics have not always been treated from a unified perspective, which would enable a comparison of different methods, tools, and study objectives.

The conference "Venice and the Adriatic coastal landscapes between past and present", organized by Iuav University and CNR ISMAR of Venice, aims to overcome this disciplinary distance by offering the opportunity for a collective discussion to analyse the geomorphological and settlement dynamics that have occurred over the millennia in maritime, lagoon, and island contexts with common characteristics, taking into account the rise in sea level that has radically modified the landscape. In an attempt to reconstruct the fluid evolution between land and sea and its consequences on the lives of ancient communities, the effort of different disciplines is combined in the analysis, description, and representation of Adriatic coastal landscapes, envisioning possible scenarios for the protection and enhancement of Cultural Heritage and architectural and urban interventions.
