Stimuli-responsive and functional materials

Shape memory polymers, mechanochromic materials, electro-responsive polymers, self-healing materials and hybrid materials and nanocomposites are the main classes of functional materials  investigated by the research group.

Shape memory polymers are smart materials that can modify their shape in response to an external stimulus such as, for example, a temperature change. Research deals with the synthesis and characterization of innovative thermoresponsive SMPs with transition temperature tuned to specific application requirements.

Hybrids can be regarded as a synergic combination of organic and inorganic constituents. They display specific functional properties stemming from intrinsic properties of their components and from their strongly interconnected nanosized domains. Hybrids with finely tuned properties are designed and synthesized in the lab.
