Bioplastics

Bioplastics are plastics that are biobased, biodegradable, or both. They offer additional advantages with respect to conventional plastics such as a reduced carbon footprint or additional waste management options such as composting. Bioplastics reduce the environmental impact of polymeric materials and are therefore an essential part of the Bioeconomy.

Biodegradable polymeric materials have been investigated by the group since 30 years, with special focus on the influence of polymer structure and morphology on biodegradability of complex polymeric systems.

Research on polymeric materials from renewable sources is among key interests of the group.
