FIP-WE@UNIBO

Since 2013, a strong mutual knowledge and trust between the EMRG in University of Bologna and the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT, Sulzbach-Rosenberg Branch, grew up. The collaboration started with a request by the new research center on Energy Storage established in Sulzbach-Rosenberg to share vision and technologies with the EMRG group.

The collaboration developed during the following years, mainly through PhD students, common research, contacts with companies and H2020 project writing. Also, a common stand at ECOMONDO, the largest Italian fair on Environmental techniques, and teaching in the Environmental Science Courses in Ravenna, were part of the collaboration.

In 2017, a new phase started. At the time, the Research Center in Marina di Ravenna, founded by Montedison in 1992, had been abandoned due to the bankruptcy of the company which managed it. With the essential financial help of the Emilia-Romagna Regional Government and the Municipality of Ravenna., the Center was refurbished and made usable again. It became the hosting place for the establishment of the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform on Waste Valorisation and Future Energy Supply at University of Bologna (FIP-WE@UNIBO).

The Framework Agreement between the University of Bologna and the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft was signed on 1st April 2022.

The FIP-WE@UNIBO is located in Marina di Ravenna.

The FIP-WE@UNIBO will be run to the benefit of both Parties as a vehicle for:

  • R&D cooperation in the field of management of resources and waste, new materials, bioenergy, energy techniques, biochar certification, measurement and analytical techniques, Life Cycle Analysis, System Analysis; at a high technology readiness levels (up to TRL 6/7)
  • Facilitating and expediting the commercialization of research and the transfer and adoption of waste management technology by industry, in the framework of Circular Economy and for Green Engineering
  • Introducing Fraunhofer methods and standards for contract research to the research community in Italy and in particular focussing on training the next generation of engineers and technicians through joint research programs
