FIELDWORK IN MOSUL (NINEVEH)

The project included archaeological excavations and reconnaissance in the eastern sector of ancient Nineveh, Mosul (400 hectares) and heritage management in relation to the management of the site both for the conservation of the structures destroyed by IS/Daesh, and for the future public presentation.


Archaeological exploration of the eastern sector of ancient Nineveh has begun. In the area subject to concession, the topographic mapping was completed in full cooperation with the SBAH to which the adopted state-of-the-art operational methodologies have been transferred from the mission. At the same time, the systematic scientific study and documentation of the collected materials has been conducted. The removal of the rubble accumulated in various sectors of the site has begun, together with the restoration of the monuments blown up by IS/Daesh.
