Researcher and Assistant Professor at the University of Bologna since 2005.

PhD achieved in Engineering of Materials in 2004 with a thesis about modeling the process of laser cutting and welding, Faculty of Engineering, University of Firenze.

MSc achieved in Mechanical Engineering in 1998 with a thesis about prediction of mechanical properties of castings by means of artificial neural networks. MSc thesis was granted by italian AMME (Associazione Meridionale di Meccanica) and presented at the International Conference "Advancing with Composites 2000", 9-11 May, Milan, Italy.

PUBLICATIONS

More than 50 publications (International Journals, International Conferences, National Conferences, National Journals), of which beyond 20 in International Journals.

Most relevant international publications have been realized in the scientific field of manufacturing processes related to laser material processing and particularly cutting and welding. Laser cutting process has been investigated experimentally and by means of modeling, simulation and optimization. The "Prediction of molten pool geometry in laser cutting" was quoted several times. Laser hybrid welding (a Laser source was used together a traditional Gas Metal Arc torch) has been studied mainly experimentally and optimized by means of statistical methods. Relative position of the two energy sources and the effect of assistant gas mixes have been investigated.

PRIN TILAS research activity was documented in the Proceedings of the most important international conferences about metal foams (Metfoam 2007, Montreal, Canada and Metfoam 2009, Bratislava, Slovakia)

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Research topics are based on experimental activity, modeling, simulation and optimization of laser material processes (mainly cutting, welding and hybrid welding) and foundry processes.

Research topics are based on experimental activity, modelling, simulation and optimisation of laser material processes (mainly cutting, welding and hybrid welding) and foundry processes.

Reviewer of some International Journals (Journal of Optics and Laser Technology and Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B, Journal of Engineering Manufacture and others).

Project Leader of the in progress Project about polymer laser welding financed by SACMI S.p.A. (budget about 150k).

Project Leader (Local Research Unit) of the two-years long PRIN INTEMA (2008) Project financed by the Italian Ministry of the Research and University (budget about 70k).

Project Leader of the Project Project Leader (Local Research Unit) of the two-years long PRIN TILAS (2006) Project financed by the Italian Ministry of the Research and University (budget about 70k).

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

Two courses since 2006 for a total of 12 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) for every Academic Year. Both courses are addressed to students attending the last years of their Degree Programme (Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management) and related to process and material selection with particular attention to traditional metals and alloys and further innovative or advanced materials.

Module "Materials and processes" at the Italian Design Summer School (IDSS), University of Bologna, for international students.

Barbara Cimatti

Barbara Cimatti

Research developer @ UniBo

Graduated with honours in Nuclear Engineering at the University of Bologna and later specializing at UCLA, Los Angeles and at the University of Colorado, Boulder, USA, Barbara Cimatti holds a Ph.D. in “Mechanics of Materials and Technology Processes” of the University of Bologna.

Since 2018 she has been working as a research developer at SSRD-ARIC UniBo to foster and support the preparation of European Research Projects in engineering fields. She often represents the University of Bologna at conferences and events held at the European Commission in Brussels, and in other locations, with lobbying and networking aims, to influence the European research funding programs and to create consortiums for new submissions. Her expertise includes the identification of funding opportunities, the finding of Consortium partners and the writing of European Projects in different programmes (H2020, Erasmus etc.), enhancing the excellence and the impact aspects of the proposal, as well as its implementation.

Since November 2018, she has been involved in the coordination of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) - Joint Programme Bioenergy in Brussels. EERA is an international association that aims at coordinating energy research for a low carbon Europe, collecting more than 250 research organizations from 30 countries.

Dr. Cimatti is the author of a number of scientific papers and a reviewer at several International Journals.

She is an Assistant Editor of the International Journal of Organizational Innovation, USA.

She has been a Visiting Professor at several Universities such as Chemnitz University of Technology - Germany; Yuan Ze University, Chang Hung University, National University of Arts, Ming Chi University and National Kaoshiung Normal University - Taiwan; Tongji University - China; Universiti Teknologi Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur; ITBA Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires – Argentina, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Madrid – Spain; Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - Spain.

She was invited as Key Note Speaker at the International Conference on Organizational Innovation held in Yogyakarta (Indonesia) in 2015.

The main themes of her research activities and lectures are: Sustainable Design, Sustainable Manufacturing, Ergonomics of Industrial Products. She usually teaches in English and in Spanish.

She is a Member of the Scientific Committee of the “Global Conference of Sustainable Manufacturing” – GCSM, established in 2003.

She is one of the creators of the “Italian Design Summer School (IDSS) – Art, Society and Industry”, which has been proposed from the University of Bologna in collaboration with some international partner universities since 2006 without interruption. She is in charge of the following courses: Characteristics and value of Made in Italy, Food Design, Fashion and Style.

Since 2003 to 2017 Barbara Cimatti was the coordinator of the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Bologna, an international and interdisciplinary institution for the diffusion of the results of research and knowledge. From 2009 to 2013 she also coordinated the activities of the Laboratory for Research on the City of the University of Bologna.

An expert in the divulgation of technology, Dr. Cimatti especially focuses on cross-cutting topics and interdisciplinary connections between hard sciences and humanities. She has given seminars at several Institutions including the Italian Institutes of Culture in Tokyo, Toronto, New York and Chicago.
