The LIFE NatuReef project took part in the international NORA – Native Oyster Restoration Alliance conference, which was held in Cartagena (Spain) from 24 to 27 November 2025. This was one of the most significant scientific events in Europe, focusing on the ecological restoration of marine habitats, particularly native oyster reefs.
The LIFE NatuReef research team contributed four scientific papers based on the study and monitoring activities carried out along the Ravenna coastline, near the mouth of the Bevano Stream, a Natura 2000 site.
Combining oyster reef restoration and coastal protection in the Mediterranean Sea
Massimo Ponti, Renata Archetti, Fabrizio Del Bianco, Stefano Ravaioli, Massimiliano Costa, Eva Turicchia, and the LIFE NatuReef research team
This contribution highlighted how oyster-based restoration interventions can combine marine ecosystem conservation with coastal protection.
Habitat mapping for assessing coastal restored oyster reef effects
Eva Turicchia, Renata Archetti, Fabrizio Del Bianco, Stefano Ravaioli, Massimiliano Costa, Massimo Ponti, and the LIFE NatuReef research team
An in-depth look at the environmental mapping techniques used to evaluate the ecological impact of the artificial reef.
Hydrodynamic studies on a restored oyster reef: Methodology and preliminary results
Renata Archetti, Massimo Ponti, Isabella Casadei, and Alessandro Antonini
A presentation of the first results from the hydrodynamic study, essential to understanding the interaction between the reef structure and wave motion.
Oyster reef restoration, engaging minds: Citizen science for coastal conservation
Eva Turicchia, Renata Archetti, Elisa Bonaccorso, Valentina Lazzari, Serena Mascia, and Massimo Ponti
The project’s focus on citizen science activities actively involved schools, citizens, and volunteers in the conservation of coastal environments.
Participation in the conference represented a significant opportunity for international visibility and exchange for LIFE NatuReef, thereby strengthening scientific networks and promoting the project’s integrated approach, which links biodiversity conservation, coastal protection, and community engagement.
