Objectives

The LIFE-NatuReef project aims to create a reef of oysters and sabellariid worms to mimic ancient ecosystems, support biodiversity, and protect coastal habitats. The project is organized around diverse specific objectives, specifically, the project aims to reach the following objectives:

1.Establish an oyster reef

LIFE NatuReef will create a submerged native oyster reef of approximately 4,000 square meters close to and parallel to the beach. Oyster reefs represent elective habitats for various marine species, contributing to the improvement of water quality and the protection of the coast.

2.Trigger sabellariid reef formation

Sabellaria polychaetes are small worms capable of creating submerged reefs by aggregating sap. With small transplants, their growth will be stimulated at the base of oyster reefs, thus playing a crucial role in consolidating structures and increasing biodiversity.

3.Enhance marine biodiversity

The goal is to increase the number of marine species, including algae, invertebrates and fish, offering an ideal place for reproduction and protection of juveniles and repopulating the surrounding sea.

4.Protect coastal habitats

The project proposes a nature-based solution to protect and restore marine and coastal habitats, creating robust and climate-resilient marine and coastal habitats and communities.

5. Maintain protected fauna and flora

By creating a habitat with high biodiversity and protecting the coast, the protected marine and coastal species present in this oasis will be better protected.

6. Increase public awareness

Educating and raising public awareness on the importance of biogenic reef restoration as a nature-based solution for coastal defense and enhancing marine biodiversity is the first step towards a paradigm shift: protecting coasts by restoring natural environments, no longer creating barriers artificial in the sea.
