The goal of the secondment has been to study a suitable regularity theory for subelliptic p-Laplacian operators. In particular, we prove Holder regularity of the gradient for solution of a degenerate p-laplacian equation in contact manifolds, expressed as p-laplacian like operator, with variable coefficients in the Heisenberg group.

A research collaboration has been started with F. Quirós, concerning the existence of positive solutions for nonlocal problems involving a
critical exponent, where the main difficulty is the lack of compactness. For lower exponents, existence of solution is easy to find, since the involved function spaces are compactly included in suitable Lebesgue spaces. Due to the lack of compactness, the necessity of a concentration-compactness principle arises.

Goal of the stay

The main goal of the research project has involved the exploitation of the congruence coefficient metric as a measure of protein contact map/distance map similarity. Before to start the secondment at UCI, several interesting properties of the congruence coefficient were already been proved by the seconded staff member. The research work at UCI has mainly involved extensive experimental testing of the congruence coefficient to solve the protein fold recognition problem. Experimental tests on predicted data recovered from the CASP repository show that the congruence coefficient can significantly improve the protein fold recognition in comparison to several other widely used similarity measure.

Goal of the stay

During the visiting research period at UC Berkeley I worked on the optimization of the HD computing algorithm for the design of a stand-alone low power platform for EMG based hand gesture recognition. We analyzed the current State-Of-the-Art in the field through an embedded platform previously designed at UC Berkeley in the group of Jan Rabaey. The system run the HD algorithm on a dense array of EMG sensors, sampling the 64 at 1kHz. Then a first version of the algorithm, run on a small FPGA+MCU system with few k-gates where it was not possible to integrate also the learning stage. Since the goal of our project was the exploration of possible solution for the design of a stand-alone system with learning and inference capabilities, I took over the design of a novel platform which integrates the 64-channel biopotential front-end designed by UC Berkeley team with the digital low-power platform designed in our group, the multicore PULP processor.
