A research collaboration has been started with F. Quirós, concerning the existence of positive solutions for nonlocal problems involving a
critical exponent, where the main difficulty is the lack of compactness. For lower exponents, existence of solution is easy to find, since the involved function spaces are compactly included in suitable Lebesgue spaces. Due to the lack of compactness, the necessity of a concentration-compactness principle arises.

We worked on a model of the distribution of cells in the visual cortex, the so called pinwheels structure of the visual cortex V1. It has been modelled as a submanifold of a Carnot group. The propagation of the signal in this structure can be induced by the restriction to the manifold of the fundamental solution of the Laplace operator in the whole space. We propose to describe the resulting kernel as the fundamental solution of the fractional laplacian on the manifold.
