Invited Forum Talk curated by OnFoods Foundation with academic and research partners.
About one third of global food output is lost along the supply chain, often during production and logistics. This Forum Talk explores circular strategies to prevent waste and valorise side streams through green processes and biotechnologies, advancing resilient, transparent, value-creating food systems. We present results from ongoing work on circular packaging, by-product logistics, and data-driven quality control in cold chains. We show how sensor data, shelf-life models, and digital twins support decisions on harvesting, processing, and distribution. We outline workflows to map side streams, size recovery assets, and schedule collections from suppliers. We report on biobased packaging trials and reuse schemes, with measured effects on protection performance and reverse logistics. For traceability, we demonstrate a lightweight digital product passport that links batches, processes, and environmental indicators. Methods include LCA, techno-economic assessment, and discrete-event simulation combined with routing optimisation. Two short industrial cases illustrate waste reduction at inbound sorting and the valorisation of processing residues. Ultimately, we argue for a state where data and materials move in the same loop, converting risk into foresight and leftovers into assets.
