Solberga - Stockholm

Preliminary information

Solberga

Pliggvägen, 51, 12639, Stoccolma, Svezia

Description of the space

The Solberga area is located south-west of Stockholm and is managed by Stockholmshem, a public housing company. It can be reached by public transport via metro+bus or commuter train+bus. However, not being directly connected by either metro or train has made the area generally unexplored by people unfamiliar with it.

Solberga was mainly built in the 1950s and 1960s (and new housing is still being developed). It consists of several public housing buildings, but also contains villas and townhouses. The garden space to be redeveloped is approximately 1700 square metres. It is currently composed of grass, bushes, trees, paved areas and flowerbeds. It is an important place for the residents who live there as it is a meeting space with beautiful trees that create a calm atmosphere and a well-used children's play area. However, the garden is not as welcoming as Stockholmshem would like it to be. It is quite worn out and needs some work, not being inviting for people, especially considering that it becomes dark and cold during the winter.

Existing urban farming activities

No food is currently produced in the designated area because the shade of the trees can make it difficult to grow plants and vegetables that need a lot of sunlight.

Vision

The primary objective of the project is the redevelopment of the garden area to make it more welcoming and inclusive. The social dimension should therefore be the focal point of the proposals submitted.

In addition, the project should also include ideas for sustainable agricultural systems that blend in with their surroundings. Gardening is indeed becoming increasingly popular in Solberga, and the residents of Pliggvägen 51 themselves have specifically requested more areas for gardening. These facilities/structures should be accessible by park users and seating with a view of the systems should be provided.

Other spaces that need to be redesigned are the entrance of the park, the paths and the site for airing out carpets and rugs, which is no longer being used.

Finally, all the proposed solutions must be functional throughout the year, where temperatures can range from +30 in summer to -10 in winter.

The possibilities for intervention are manifold, but it is requested to maintain the existing trees and to reuse as much as possible the existing elements of the garden.

Resources

Being at an early stage of the process it is difficult to determine the budget that can be allocated for the renovation of the area. However, there are opportunities to access some internal funding as well as external funding from Swedish agencies. The lower the cost of the project, the easier it is to find funding and implement it.
