Claudio Minca presented research at the ATLAS Critical Tourism Studies Conference
Date:
Event location: Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan
Claudio attended the 'In Between Conference 2026', organised by ATLAS Critical Tourism Studies Asia-Pacific, which took place on 9–10 March, 2026 at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. During the conference, he presented a paper entitled 'En route: the intersection of differential mobilities across the Balkan Route', which was based on his work within the ERC TheGAME project.
His talk focused on the ethical and political implications of managing mobility along the Balkan Route. He highlighted how this migration corridor is criss-crossed by a complex network of informal micro-routes created by migrants to render themselves invisible and avoid being stopped, and in some cases turned back, by the authorities. This informal geography interacts with other forms of mobility, particularly in major tourist destinations, where the mechanisms that differentiate groups of individuals on the basis of their right to mobility are particularly visible.
