Presentation on formal camps in relation to the route, by Yolanda Weima and Claudio Minca

Roberta Gentili and Yolanda Weima attended and presented papers at the Conference Keywording the European Irregularized Migration Regime: Reflections from/on the Peripheries, held from 11-13 April, 2024, in Zagreb, Croatia

The event was held as part of two projects at the Institue of Ethnology and Folklore Research: the Croatian Science Foundation research project, “The European Irregularized Migration Regime at the Periphery of the EU: from Ethnography to Keywords” (ERIM, 2020-2024), and the European Union funded project, “Poetics and Politics of Ethnography Today” (EPP). The organization also included collaboration with the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ljubljana, the Institute of Ethnography of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, as well as the Association of Croatian Architects.

Yolanda presented a paper on “Routing Camps” (co-authored by Claudio Minca), exploring how the wide variety of formal accommodation in the Balkan Route is both shaped by and shaping of informal mobilities in the region. Roberta presented on the The Shifting of the Balkan Route to the Una-Sana Canton and the Informal (Im)Mobility of People on the Move,” drawing on her recent doctoral fieldwork in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina

The packed programme included critical research on irregularized migration, with geographical foci from Turkey to the English Channel, over three days of academic presentations. The conference organizers nevertheless effectively prioritized discussion and conversation, allowing participants to make valuable connections across the contributions and sessions.
