Makeshift shelter in the forest

Along the borders: preliminary fieldwork at the Italian-Slovenian and Slovenian-Croatian borders | July 2024

By Emma Beatrice Farina

From the 13th to 16th of July I conducted research on the Italian-Slovenian border in the Trieste area and at the south-western Slovenian-Croatian border area with Lucija Klun, a research associate of the project.

The aim of this fieldwork session was to investigate strategies refugees employ while on the move along the Balkan Route. In these areas I documented sites where refugees had stopped to rest, documenting shelter structures and discarded items. Such sites are a fundamental part of my research, as I can analyse and classify the characteristics of the material culture of migration along the Balkan Route.
