Bosnia-Herzegovina de/re-routings
By Emma Beatrice Farina
In July 2025 I conducted field research in Bihać. This fieldwork focused on the abandoned makeshift camp at Krajina Metal, a disused former steel mill. It had largely been used as a makeshift camp from 2020 to its documented eviction in July 2021 and was strategically located near the Bira refugee camp.
As the camp was cleaned out following the eviction, I focused on the recording of graffiti left by former residents. Graffiti may be read as a direct manifestation of refugees’ experiences, as they mark their presence in the site and allows them to express narratives, view and emotions on the journey. The analysis of these traces can contribute to reconstructing the camp’s life, including how spaces were used, and by whom, as well as the micropolitics of camp life.
