Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, University of Bologna, conducts her research in the area of cellular biochemistry. Her research interests are particularly directed at the role of mitochondria and mitochondrial DNA in metabolic and hypoxic adaptation during the various stages of tumor progression. In recent years, her research has focused on the role of complex I oxidative phosphorylation as a modulator of tumorigenic potential in in vitro and in vivo models. Engaged in national and international research projects, she collaborates with several European Institutes. Since 2012, she has been a research member of CIRI - Life Sciences and Health Technologies at the University of Bologna. Author of numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, she has received several awards.

My scientific interests focus on the role of mitochondrial DNA mutations on metabolism in the context of human pathology. During my Ph.D. I identified and characterized rare mtDNA mutations pathogenic for Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy, studied the role of mitochondrial biogenesis in this pathology, and contributed to the definition of a novel form of dominant optic atrophy. I spent almost a year at the University of Miami starting in 2018. Soon after my return to Italy, I studied the role of mtDNA mutations on cancer cell metabolism and in tumor progression. In 2013, received a fellowship from the Umberto Veronesi Foundation and the BBA-Bioenergetics award as second best poster during Euromit 2014. I am currently involved in several projects regarding the role of OXPHOS in chemotherapy resistance and the escape of cancer cells from dormancy and in evaluating the structural organization of OXPHOS complexes in cancer cells.
