MitoB&B's contribution to cardiac regeneration research

An international research team led by scholars from the University of Bologna has identified a key gene that could enable repair of damage sustained by the heart after a heart attack. The study-- published in the journal Nature Cardiovascular Research -shows that the inability of heart muscle to regenerate after a heart attack would be, at least in part, due to the action of a class of steroid hormones, glucocorticoids, which after birth would push heart muscle cells to mature while blocking their proliferation.

As part of this project, MitoB&B was involved in the metabolic characterization of GR-KO cardiomyocytes using microrespirometry techniques (Agilent SeaHorse XF96).

Fondazione Carisbo for MitoB&B.

Fondazione Carisbo will fund MitoB&B under the Call for Medical Research and High Technology 2022. The project "Implementation of a Multifunctional Optical Microscopy Platform Dedicated to Live Imaging," involves the integration of the current available epifluorescence optical microscopy instrumentation with an LED illumination system and a very high resolution camera for live imaging analysis of cells.
