The first bio blitz of the LIFE NatuReef project, an environmental education initiative involving students from classes 3A and 3B of the Novello Middle School in Ravenna, was held on October 11, 2024. The event occurred along the beach near the mouth of the Bevano Stream, where the Reef will be located.

This activity is part of the objectives of the LIFE NatuReef project, which aims not only to build a biogenic reef but also to raise awareness of the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems and nature-based solutions to address issues related to climate change.

During the bio blitz, the students were involved in a citizen science activity: they cataloged animal species (such as bivalves and gastropods), plants (trunks, algae, plant remains), and waste (tar, cigarette butts) present in the coastal area. For this activity, they used a specific protocol (emerged MAC) on which they received training on October 4th.

The students will be equipped with 1m x 1m detection frames, which they will launch at various points on the beach to discover what is in that area. They will then fill out detection sheets to record their observations.

The data collected will then be published on the Reef Check Med website.

This bio blitz represents an important opportunity to raise awareness among young citizens on protecting marine ecosystems. It allows them to understand and recognize the value of the organisms and materials found along the coasts.
