With Resolution No. 1114 of July 7, 2025, the Regional Government of Emilia-Romagna has approved the Single Regional Authorization Provision (PAUR), including the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), for the construction of a submerged reef made of oysters and sabellaria at the mouth of the Bevano Stream, in the municipality of Ravenna.

The project received unanimous approval from the relevant authorities, which recognized its environmental compatibility and the innovative nature of the intervention: an “organic” and experimental coastal defense structure that combines marine ecosystem restoration and coastal erosion mitigation.

The reef, made of wire mesh mattresses filled with limestone rocks and seeded with native oysters (Ostrea edulis) and sabellaria, will be entirely constructed offshore, avoiding any impact on land areas. It will undergo continuous monitoring for 5 years and contributes to SDG 13 – Climate Action of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This major milestone marks the start of the operational phase of the experimental reef. It confirms LIFE NatuReef as a model of innovation in coastal protection and marine biodiversity through Nature-Based Solutions.
