Laboratory of XAI using Data and Legal Design

LXAI

Duration: 20 hours

Participants: PhD candidates

The "Laboratory of XAI using Data and Legal Design" (LXAI) is a 20-hour program specifically designed for PhD candidates who are interested in exploring the problem of transparency and explicability of AI tools. The course is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the legal and ethical implications of AI and how these considerations impact the design and development of AI systems.

The course is in line with the Proposal of a Regulation on AI and the High-level Expert Group guidelines of AI, which emphasize the importance of monitoring the respect of human rights in high-level risk applications of AI. In particular, the course focuses on detecting bias and reinforcing the non-discrimination principle, especially when AI tools are applied to vulnerable and fragile populations such as women, people with disabilities, linguistic minorities, and immigrants.

The LXAI course adopts a "learning-by-doing" methodology, where students will engage in a variety of activities designed to help them explore and understand the complex issues surrounding AI and the law. This includes brainstorming sessions, experimental creation, testing, and evaluation of results. This hands-on approach to learning will give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a practical setting and to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities of XAI.

The course is taught by leading experts in the field of AI and the law, and provides students with the opportunity to engage in discussions and debates with their peers. By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the legal and ethical implications of AI and how to design and develop AI systems that are transparent, explicable, and respectful of human rights.

Overall, the "Laboratory of XAI using Data and Legal Design" (LXAI) is an essential program for PhD candidates who are interested in exploring the challenges and opportunities of AI and the law. The course provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to make informed decisions about the design and development of AI systems and to ensure that these systems are respectful of human rights and ethical principles.
