Infrastructure

The HPC infrastructure and S3 geodistributed storage platform for Precision Medicine is an on-premises research infrastructure designed to support data-intensive workflows, ensuring performance, reliability, and compliance with University governance and data protection requirements.

The infrastructure is hosted within University-managed server rooms and integrates high-performance computing resources with a distributed storage platform designed for large-scale data management.

The HPC cluster includes three NVIDIA HGX GPU servers, equipped with a total of 12 NVIDIA H100 GPUs for advanced computational workloads, and three high-performance CPU servers, each featuring dual processors with 128 cores per socket and 2 threads per core, for a total of 512 logical threads per node. The system is complemented by encrypted SSD storage, providing high performance, redundancy, and fault tolerance for active research data. Supporting components, including login and control nodes, are provided through virtualized infrastructure.

The storage platform is based on a geodistributed S3-compatible architecture deployed across three sites in Cesena and Bologna. The system is built on Quantum P200 technology, an enterprise-grade solution designed for the reliable management of large-scale data. It provides integrated hardware and software components for object storage, synchronous data replication, and multisite protection, ensuring high availability and operational continuity. All data are encrypted both in transit and at rest using protocols and algorithms compliant with international security standards.

Compute and storage resources are centrally managed and made available to authorized users through a controlled access model.

Security and reliability are ensured through adherence to University information security policies, data protection regulations (including GDPR), and established principles of access control, logging, and accountability. System activities are logged and monitored to ensure traceability of actions and support security and compliance requirements. Relevant system activities and access events are logged and monitored to ensure traceability and support security and compliance requirements.
