The European Union and the Migration Challenge: the role of aid and education, yesterday and today

The European Union and the Migration Challenge (EUMCHA) is a three-year Erasmus–Jean Monnet initiative (2023–2026) led by Professor Francesca Fauri. The project explores the complex dynamics of migration in Europe by comparing past and present experiences and by engaging an international, multidisciplinary network of scholars. Its ultimate goal is to generate knowledge and reflections that can support the European Union in addressing today’s most urgent migration challenges.

Building on Professor Fauri’s previous Jean Monnet Chair (2016–2019) and Jean Monnet Project (2020–2022) at the University of Bologna, EUMCHA continues to advance research on the European Union and migration. By integrating economic, political, and sociological perspectives, the project uses history as a lens to better understand contemporary issues. In particular, EUMCHA focuses on:

  • developing strategies to manage and contain migration flows through aid and development;
  • examining the role of education and schooling in fostering the inclusion and integration of immigrants and their children.
