EUFutures | Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence
EUFutures investigates how the European Union can secure sustainable, inclusive, and resilient economic growth in an era marked by climate change, geopolitical competition, and rising social and economic tensions.
Hosted by the University of Bologna’s Department of Political and Social Sciences, the Centre serves as an interdisciplinary laboratory to rethink the foundations of the EU’s economic model. Led by Manuela Moschella, Chiara Benassi, and Arianna Tassinari, three renowned scholars of European political economy, EUFutures engages a diverse team of researchers, students, and stakeholders to foster a multidisciplinary environment at the intersection of research, teaching, and policy engagement.

EUFutures Research Focus
Through innovative research, new teaching initiatives, and dialogue with societal and economic actors, EUFutures aims to deepen understanding of Europe’s contemporary growth challenges, learn from international experiences, and develop forward-looking policy strategies that support a more cohesive, just, and future-oriented European Union.
The research agenda is organised around three core themes:
- Understanding the Foundations of EU growth: Analysing the historical and institutional foundations of the European growth model.
- Comparing global economic strategies: Exploring how other major economies approach economic development and industrial policy.
- Imagining Europe’s economic futures: Developing forward-looking policy perspectives on sustainable and inclusive growth within the European Union.

A Strong Regulator? The EU’s Uneven Regulatory Capacity in Green Industrial Policy
A new paper published on Politics and Governance, vol. 14, co-authored by Fabio Bulfone, Joan Miró, and Manuela Moschella, examines how the European Union uses regulation as a key instrument of industrial policy in the context of the Green Deal and increasing geopolitical competition.

EUFutures Events
This month, EUFutures launched its first teaching modules at the University of Bologna. These modules focus on "EU-level Policymaking in the Labour Market and Industrial Relations Sector" and on "Comparative Capitalisms and the Future of Growth in Europe".
In May, EUFutures will also deliver the inaugural events of its public lecture series, “EU Growth Under Stress,” which aims to reconstruct the critical junctures, crises, and socio-political dynamics that have shaped the evolution of the EU’s growth model and its institutional and political foundations.
In the same month, EUFutures will also launch the first in a series of Policy Labs, where students will work alongside senior academics and policymakers to analyze current challenges facing the EU economy and develop forward-looking policy recommendations.
