The new publication "Handbook of European Union Governance", edited by Sonia Lucarelli and James Sperling, provides a comprehensive map of the European Union’s multifaceted governance machinery. This expansive volume compares global, milieu, security, economic, and societal systems to identify how the EU navigates the modern challenges of public safety, social welfare, and economic competitiveness.

The volume features the work of members from the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence EUFutures at the University of Bologna. Sonia Lucarelli, Professor of Political Science at the Alma Mater, is the lead editor of the Handbook and co-author of the introductory chapter, "Governance and the European Union." Chapter 16, "The economic governance of financial services in the EU", is authored by Lucia Quaglia, Professor of Political Science at the University of Bologna, who provides a rigorous analysis of the regulatory and monitoring systems that define the Union's financial landscape.

A significant contribution to the Handbook’s economic section comes from Lucia Quaglia, Professor of Political Science at the University of Bologna and a key member of the EUFutures team, who in Chapter 16, "The economic governance of financial services in the EU", provides a rigorous analysis of the regulatory and monitoring systems that define the Union's financial landscape.

The Handbook addresses the Union's governance across a wide spectrum of contemporary issues, including societal governance—examining AI regulation, data protection, and social welfare—and security governance, which analyzes cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, and "hybrid" threats. Furthermore, it explores the EU's strategic "Milieu" and global role in regions such as the Indo-Pacific, the Arctic, and the Mediterranean.
