The refugee and migrant protection system is at a turning point. A growing trend of externalization practices, seen in Italy and elsewhere, emerges as a potential direction for future migration governance, highlighting an urgent need to devise innovative strategies to bolster protective measures for these vulnerable groups. One key approach is through complementary pathways—safe, structured routes that support resettlement and allow refugees and migrants to legally stay in a third country that meets their protection needs. The upcoming talk will be divided into two parts. First, it will delve into an analytical and critical discussion of complementary pathways within both the international and European protection systems, with a special emphasis on complementary labour pathways and the prospective influence of the private sector in revamping the protection mechanism. Second, it will introduce an innovative collective project led by the University of Bologna: Reimagining Mobilities. Reimagining Mobilities explores the intricate tensions and conflicts inherent in policies, practices, and narratives tied to climate justice and diverse mobility regimes, offering a dynamic illustration of how academic environments can serve as fertile ground for nurturing critical thought, which can and needs to be applied beyond academia.
Speaker: Dr. Camilla Ioli, PhD candidate, Department of Sociology and Law of Economics.
