GAMEX (Generative AI Modeling for Extreme Events)

Una Europa Seed Funding initiative (2026)

Programme GAMEX 2026

GAMEX (Generative AI Modeling for Extreme Events) is a Una Europa Seed Funding initiative launched in 2026. The project brings together researchers working in statistics, machine learning, artificial intelligence and data science to establish an international research network at the intersection of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Extreme Value Theory (EVT).

The initiative aims to develop reliable, interpretable and scalable methods for modelling rare, high-impact events such as floods, heatwaves and financial crises. By connecting the scalability of generative modelling with the statistical foundations of Extreme Value Theory, GAMEX promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and supports the development of new approaches for analysing extreme phenomena in complex systems.

The project combines research collaboration, training activities and academic networking, implemented through a series of events and mobility opportunities organised throughout 2026.

Project objectives

GAMEX aims to foster collaboration between researchers working on statistical modelling of extreme events and experts developing generative machine learning approaches.

The initiative pursues three main objectives:

Scientific advancement
Strengthening collaboration on new methodological approaches integrating Generative AI and Extreme Value Theory for modelling extremes.

Community building and training
Supporting PhD students and early-career researchers through seminars, workshops and short-term research visits.

Network development
Expanding collaboration across institutions and laying the foundations for future international research initiatives.

Key activities in 2026

The GAMEX initiative is structured around a set of coordinated activities organised during 2026, combining scientific events, training opportunities and research mobility.

Scientific Workshop – Bologna
Generative AI Modelling for Extreme Events (GAME 2026)
University of Bologna, 11–12 June 2026
