The 'European Universities' initiative aims to encourage the structural development of the European Higher Education Area and the European Research Area, with a view to creating genuine European campuses.

From these premises during 2018 UNA Europa was born, an alliance between some of the most prestigious European universities -University of Bologna, Paris1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, KU Leuven, Freie Universität Berlin, Uniwersytet Jagielloński w Krakowie, Universidad Complutense de Madrid,  University of Edinburgh and University of Helsinki - which aims to mark a further step towards the realisation of an integrated, multilingual and multidisciplinary European academic space, based on the principles of interconnectedness, inclusiveness, innovation and internationalisation.

The University of Bologna's participation in the Alliance was communicated to the Academic Bodies at their meetings in July 2018 (to the Academic Senate at its meeting on 17/07/2018 and to the Board of Directors at its meeting on 24/07/2018), while the signing of the Cooperation Agreement was approved by the Board of Directors at its meeting on 29/01/2019.

Given the large number of competences involved and the complexity of the organisation envisaged by the project and the Alliance, the Una Europa Sector has been set up within the SSRD Division. The Una Europa Unit is the administrative control in the management of the project and alliance activities, also performing the function of coordinating all the administrative staff involved and supporting the Vice-Rector for International Relations and the Una Europa Delegate in the control of the working groups involving the academic community.
