UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNA

THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNA (UNIBO), was founded in 1088 and is considered the oldest university in Western Europe. Nowadays, it remains one of the most important institutions of higher education across Europe with around 85.000 enrolled students, 11 Schools, 33 research departments, 3000 academics and 3000 administrative staff. University of Bologna is a comprehensive Higher Education Institution located in the Emilia-Romagna region, in the center-north of Italy. It is located in 5 Campuses, the main one being in the city of Bologna and 4 additional campuses are located in the Romagna region, in the city of Forlì, Cesena, Rimini and Ravenna. University of Bologna is today the most internationalized of all Italian universities. Since the beginning of the Erasmus Mundus Action II Programme (2007), UNIBO has been involved in 51 consortia (Lots) exchanging and managing more than 500 students and scholars. The research fields of the Department for Life Quality Studies as a whole give particular importance to an approach focused on health prevention in order to better meet the needs of a society experiencing an increasing life expectancy, which, however, must not be considered simply as a quantitative increase. The main objective, as underlined also by the EU, must be to add life to years”. What becomes crucial is the issue of lifestyles that are not merely “conservative” or exasperatingly “spectacular”, but creative (e.g. sport and fashion): ways of behaving by which the individual, given the opportunity to acquire a critical self-awareness, is able to appreciate, define and communicate his or her identity. Thematic priorities of the Department are therefore the fundamental disciplines that can be included in the “Life Sciences” (and that pertain to the biological and chemical fields) able to take advantage of new and emerging research opportunities regarding the individual’s health and prevention. This way, scientific foundations are laid for protective/preventive actions able to fight major wellbeing pathologies also in a gender perspective. The research activities are carried on in a multidisciplinary environment aimed at evaluating human movement in different application contexts, such as kinesiology, joint biomechanics, sports medicine, promotion of lifestyles.
