RIZZOLI ORTHOPEADIC INSTITUTE

Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute is a Public Institute, founded in 1896, that comprises Orthopaedic Healthcare and Research. It is the most prestigious Italian Institute in the field of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. In 1981, the Italian Health Ministry gave Rizzoli Institute the status of 'Scientific research hospital' due both to its high level of healthcare in orthopaedics and its commitment toward basic and clinical research. In fact, the Institute's strength lies in the close integration between healthcare (about 150,000 patients examined and over 20,000 surgical procedures performed every year) and scientific research, which is carried out in fifteen laboratories, employing a staff of more than 300 individuals, including medical doctors, biologists, engineers and technicians. Rizzoli Institute has 377 beds in total and it is among the biggest orthopaedic facilities in Italy and Europe. Patients come from all over the country and even from abroad. There is a staff of about 1,400 people to support all the activities. Furthermore, Rizzoli Institute has also an outstanding international reputation as an education centre, having introduced many innovative procedures that are transferred to orthopaedic surgeons by means of dedicated courses and training. The Ward “Revision surgery of hip prosthesis and development of new implants” focuses mainly on prosthetic hip. In particular, the most modern prosthetic solutions for revisions are performed using highly compatible and low wear biomaterials. Attention is paid to restoring severe bone loss using biobank bone, growth factors, concentrated autologous stem cells and synthetic bone replacements. While The Complex Structure 2nd Orthopaedic and Traumatologic Clinic focuses the general field of orthopedics and traumatology, with particular focus on prosthetic diseases of the lower limb (hip, knee) and sports diseases.
