After months of waiting, meetings and planning, we have finally managed to organise our first period of fieldwork.
In this first campaign, our aim was twofold: to document the structures and to meet with local people to gather their memories and testimonies.
Over the past few weeks, we have been working in the area between Piedilama square and Colle dell’Ara: here, we have catalogued all the structures, documenting their characteristics, state of preservation and the presence of any objects on the surrounding ground. Just as we would in an archaeological site, we used tools such as drones, laser scanners and GPS to photograph every detail and create digital models of the current situation.
At the same time, we set about getting to know the people who still live in Piedilama and Pretare today and meeting those who were willing to share their memories of the people and places before the earthquake with us. Starting precisely with memories of the houses and places – their names and their appearance – we gradually came to know the people who lived there too, some only through their stories and others in person. This helped us to gather testimonies and photographs to reconstruct Arquata del Tronto as it was before 2016.
