COREu has been conceived to ensure a holistic approach to CCS value chain demonstration and to promote the exchange of knowledge and experience across Europe. The project brings together a consortium of over 40 partners, including emitters, technology providers, gas transmission system operators, transportation companies, research institutes and universities, all known for their expertise and leadership in this field.
LISES will contribute to identify, further develop and apply the best available models for the quantitative risk assessment of the CCS value chain, addressing the safety and risk management of CCS applications.

Horizon Europe – Clean Hydrogen Parthership

The NICOLHy project aims to develop novel insulation concepts based on Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIP) that enables the safe, constant energy efficient storage of large quantities of LH2. New design concepts are needed because the current technologies used in small and medium storages today are not suitable for up-scaling since would imply prohibitive costs, long construction time, low failure tolerance and limitation on tank shape selection.
LISES will coordinate WP3, addressing the safety of the novel insulation concepts, carrying out experimental and modelling activities addressing the performance of VIP in normal conditions and in the presence of external fires.

Horizon Europe – Clean Hydrogen Parthership

ELVHYS is a pre-normative research project coordinated by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU, and co-funded by the European Commission, the Clean Hydrogen JU under the Horizon Europe programme, and UKRI.
ELVHYS aims to provide indications on inherently safer and efficient cryogenic hydrogen technologies and operations in mobile applications by providing innovative safety strategies including selection of effective safety barriers and hazard zoning strategies, which are the results of a detailed risk analysis. This will be carried out by applying an inter-disciplinary approach and conducting experimental, theoretical, and numerical studies both on the cryogenic hydrogen transferring operations and on the phenomena that may arise from the loss of containment of a piece of equipment containing hydrogen.
In the project LISES investigates key methodological aspects on the qualitative and quantitative risk analysis of the hydrogen transfer operations and develops models for the consequence assessment of jet release scenarios.

Cyber attacks alarm the population, damage the economy and endanger the very safety of citizens when they affect the distribution networks of essential services such as health, energy, transport, and critical infrastructures of modern society. The SERICS project aims to identify the key security and privacy issues that cause societal harm, economic losses and hinder the adoption of smart city technologies, taking into account technical issues but also legal and societal aspects related to security and privacy.
LISES participates to Spoke 7: Infrastructure Security, which general objective is the advancement of infrastructure security technologies, with particular interest on industrial and critical infrastructures.

The program of the project “NEST, Network for Energy Sustainable Technologies” framed in the PE program “Green Energies for the Future” aims to connect the main laboratories and university research groups and the main national research bodies, identifying interdisciplinary skills in order to develop technologies for the conversion and use of renewable sources that should be sustainable, both from an environmental and a social point of view, and resilient for the energy production and distribution, while being less subject to the risks deriving from the current supply system of fossil fuels, basically, oil, and natural gas. The ambition is to build a competent Italian leadership, strongly integrated with the territory and companies and capable of supporting the future development towards sustainable and decarbonized energy production and distribution.

Environmental pressure in port areas and in urban areas close to ports is high owing to emissions from ships, port machinery and transport to/from the port areas. LNG is proposed as a low-carbon clean fuel for marine transport in port areas. The boost of LNG for marine and terrestrial propulsion may be a key to enhance the sustainability of port areas, protecting health of population and cultural heritage. However distribution networks and port infrastructures for the bunkering of LNG-powered ships requires technologies and solutions assuring a high level of safety in touristic areas of the Adriatic and Ionian sea, avoiding trade-offs among environment protection and safety of passengers and personnel. The overall objective of the SUPER-LNG PLUS project is to increase the level of safety, environmental quality and sustainability of LNG maritime transportation in the Adriatic and Ionian seas, while the goals are to "Promote the SUPER-LNG project outcomes and results to national/regional/ level" and also to "promote the use of project outcomes to potential benificiaries." These goals will be achieved by the following actions: 1) Organisation of three meetings in the countries of the benificiaries, Greece, Italy and Slovenia, either in person or online open to the public (granted action 1 out of the pre-defined menu) ; 2) Organisation of a workshop within the international conference Loss Prevention 2022, either in person or online; 3) Organisation of a training activity in Greece for Safety of LNG at ports, either in person or on line (granted action 2 out of the pre-defined menu) and 4) Enhancement of the first call delivered moodle platform's data and operability on LNG safety and security at ports (granted action 6 out of the pre-defined menu). The Enhancement will be performed on the Consequence analysis of LNG accidental released scenarios at port areas, by CFD modeling and estimation of safety zones for the population and emergency responders.
The main benificiaries will be regional, national and port authorities. The project will contribute to the sustainable transport and mobility solutions by supporting safe use of LNG, as a fuel, in the ADRION area.

Interreg Italy-Croatia project

The project aims at significantly enhancing Civil Protection’s capacity in managing natural disasters (floods, forest fires, earthquakes) in the Croatian and Italian Adriatic basin. The specific goal of the project is to design an innovative and efficient Emergency Decision Support System capable of integrating traditional data with those voluntarily provided by citizens through social media. The prerequisite for all the activities is cross-border cooperation.

The accidental or deliberate release of CBRNE materials are low probability events that can have a significant impact on citizens and society. Whenever and wherever they occur, they usually require a gradual and multi-facetted response as they tend to provoke severe and unexpected physical, psychological, societal, economical and political effects that cross EU-borders. Successful CBRNE resilience requires a global System-of-Systems approach.

The EDEN project will leverage the added-value of tools and systems from previous R&D efforts and improve CBRNE resilience through their adaptation and integration. The concept of the EDEN project is to provide a “toolbox of toolboxes” EDEN Store to give stakeholders access to interoperable capabilities they deem important, or affordable, from a certified set of applications. It will share the burden of development and allows for lessons to be learned and applications to be enhanced. The benefit of the EDEN concept is that integration will be applied at the application level. This means that all countries and stakeholders, irrespective of their existing capability levels, will gain immediate advantages through improved interoperability.

EDEN Store will allow capabilities to be shared among multi-national CBRNE stakeholders, which is paramount in cross-border incident management, and through time allow for a build up of common capability across European boundaries. EDEN will be validated by three themed end-user demonstrations (Food Industry, Multi Chemical, Radiological) covering multiple hazards (CBRNE), phases of the security cycle, response tiers, and stakeholders.

The EDEN consortium includes CBRNE domain end-users, major stakeholders, large system integration and solution providers, including SMEs with innovative solutions, and RTOs. The impact of EDEN is to provide affordable CBRNE resilience and market sustainability through the better integration of systems in real operations and thus enhancing the safety of citizens.

The SAPHEDRA project will deliver a formal procedure with a set of data to evaluate models and tools for consequence assessment of accident scenarios, useful for emerging risk management. The project will also deliver a platform to further disseminate information in the future. This will be the first time that it will be possible to compare tools (old tools and new tools) between each other for cases related to emerging and new technology-related risks and it represents the main added value of the project. The use of an internet platform allows to keep the information always up to date and accessible.

The Seveso 3 directive requires a detailed risk assessment where the estimation of the consequences of major accidents are key inputs for decision-making, such as the delivery of the permit to operate, land-use planning, and the preparation of emergency plans.

Three types of stakeholders will be interested in the results of this project:
- Regulators, who need to provide robust evidence explaining their decisions to industry, planning authorities and the general public.
- Industry and their technical support (consulting companies), who need to define and optimize safety constraints such as buffer zones around their facilities early in the design process, using tools that will be recognized by the regulators.
- Research community, who need to develop appropriate hazard evaluation models.

Over the recent past the accumulation of major mishaps, crises and accidents have made it clear that organisations must still improve their capabilities to address safety “not a stand-alone activity that is separate from the main activities and processes of the organization” but as an integrated part of critical project management. Further it is critical also to understand how weaknesses not only in the technical but also in the organisational interfaces can contribute to significant losses and major industrial accidents.

TOSCA (Total Operation Management for Safety Critical Activities) is concerned with the integration of industrial operations into a total performance management system so that concerns about safety, quality and productivity are addressed in an integrated way during life-cycle of a project or a product. The industrial domain of application regards process control industries (e.g., chemical industries, power generation, offshore oil & gas platforms, etc.) that may vary in size, regulatory and cultural aspects.

TOSCA will examine vulnerabilities of the technical, human and organisational systems that may have an impact in safety, quality and productivity. Safety critical activities can be seen as ‘projects’ or ‘safety cases’ that must be examined from the perspectives of many stakeholders (e.g., different departments, subcontractors, regulatory authorities, etc) and decision-making at different organizational levels (e.g., top managers, supervisors and operators).

A participative approach is required that should collect knowledge from the sharp-end operators and integrate it with formal descriptions of how the system works and how responses should be coordinated across the whole organisation. Furthermore, TOSCA should enhance the management of changes and provide a facility for testing out the effectiveness of the possible action plan devised.

iNTeg-Risk (Early Recognition, Monitoring, and Integrated Management of Emerging, New Technology related Risks) is a project that responds to the call of offer from the FP7 (Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development) in the area of “Nano-sciences, Nano-technologies, Materials and new Production Technologies”. iNTeg-Risk coordinates research and development sub-projects related to new materials and technologies for establishing a common EU approach to face the challenge of emerging risks within the next 15 years.The main goal of iNTeg-Risk – Project is to establish a holistic approach for facing the challenge of emerging risks, due to new materials and technologies, within the next 15 years.

R-Tech Specific Role: R-Tech is actively involved and plays an important role in the technical development of tools / applications for improving early recognition and monitoring of emerging risks (e.g. RiskEars, Risk Atlas, etc.).
