FAQ HORSE

Why choose the Ovum Pick Up technique?

The Ovum Pick Up technique can be used if you want to get embryos from old mares, from mares with uterine pathologies, from mares that are in sport activity, if you want to get embryos even outside the breeding season, if the seminal material of the chosen stallion is of poor quality or is available in limited quantities.

Which donor mares are eligible for Ovum Pick Up?

All non-pregnant mares are suitable without age limits, although efficiency decreases in mares over 14 years of age.

In case of Ovum Pick Up the donor mare is subjected to pharmacological treatments?

No hormonal stimulation is required for Ovum Pick Up. The donor must be lightly sedated at the time of collection. After the collection, as a precautionary measure, an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic treatment is performed.

Which stallions can be used for ICSI?

All stallions can be used, even those that are subfertile. Fresh, chilled or frozen semen can be used.

At what time of the year can the Ovum Pick Up be performed?

Ovum Pick Up can be done throughout the year, even outside the breeding season because the oocytes are always present on the ovary. The embryos produced can be successfully frozen, therefore the collection of oocytes using Ovum Pick Up is also recommended in the non-reproductive season.

Why choose embryo transfer from a donor mare to a recipient?

Embryo transfer from a donor mare to a recipient can be used if embryos are to be obtained from old mares without uterine pathologies, or if mares are in sporting activity.

Is it necessary to have receiving mares for the transfer of fresh embryos?

No, it is not necessary. Both the embryos produced with the Ovum Pick Up-ICSI technique or in vivo can be successfully frozen and transferred later. The mean percentage of pregnancy after transfer of frozen-thawed embryos is 60%.
