PROJECT

The European research project ChiLLS - Children in Legal Language Settings (2018-2021) - was funded by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Justice (Grant agreement JUST-AG-2017/JUST-JACC-AG-2017-801695). The project focuses on criminal, and asylum proceedings involving particularly vulnerable children who do not speak the language of the proceeding and need an interpreter to communicate

The project goals were the following:

- developing a  set of tools to enhance protection and support for the most vulnerable children who are involved in criminal or administrative (asylum) proceedings and who do not speak the language of the proceeding;

- developing IT tools and resources for professionals working with highly vulnerable minors, and

- creating the conditions for training a community of experts that will be able to provide specialist knowledge and support to better manage cases of particularly vulnerable minors (on the basis of the experience they have lived through, their language and culture, etc.) who come into contact with the criminal and administrative system of a country and do not speak the local language.

The project has set up an on-line forum for professionals working with highly vulnerable minors to interact with experts who have specialist knowledge and can help them better manage cases of minors who come into contact with the legal and administrative system of a country and do not speak the language of the country.
