Welcome to the second issue of the EUFutures Newsletter!
Over the first half of this year, the EUFutures Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence has moved from its initial launch phase straight into full activity. We inaugurated our public lecture series "EU Growth Under Stress" with distinguished international guest speakers, engaged students in hands-on Policy Labs, and contributed to major academic conferences and research. But we are just getting started.
Looking ahead to the autumn term, we will launch new teaching modules exploring EU power dynamics, global financial governance, and industrial policy. Stay tuned also for the announcement of our program of EUFutures public lectures for the academic year 2026-2027: "save the dates" will be coming soon, after the summer break.

Enterprise and Integration: Big Business and the Making of the European Single Market
On May 11, 2026, EUFutures inaugurated its public lecture series "EU Growth Under Stress" at Palazzo Hercolani in Bologna. Economic historian Grace Ballor (Bocconi University) explored the historical interplay between big business, European integration, and the constraints on EU industrial policy.

Beyond the Regulatory State: Europe’s Quest to Transform Itself for the Geopolitical Age

First Policy Development Lab
Held on May 13 & 18, 2026, this two-part interactive lab led by Profs. Benassi and Tassinari from EUFutures, supported by Dr. Di Carlo from London School of Economics, engaged UNIBO Master’s students in a stakeholder-based simulation to assess the EU "Union of Skills" strategy for the green and digital transitions.

2026 SASE Conference | EUFutures Steering Committee
Manuela Moschella, Chiara Benassi, and Arianna Tassinari presented their work at the SASE (Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics) Conference on "Fighting Divisions: Conflict and Power in a Post-Globalisation Order", held in Bordeaux in July 2026, contributing to panels on industrial policy, climate change, AI, and labor reform.

New publications
🔵 "The New Politics of EU Industrial Policy: From the Regulatory State to a Transformational State", a new paper co-authored by Donato Di Carlo, Kathleen R. McNamara, and Manuela Moschella, and published in "Governance", highlights how states across advanced economies are increasingly reasserting a more directive role in shaping markets.
🔵 Two new papers on population ageing and digital transformation by Marco Albertini, published in the "European Journal of Ageing" and in "European Societies", explore how public policies respond to the needs of ageing individuals and analyses support policies for informal caregivers in EU countries.
🔵 "Shifting paths? The evolution of Southern European growth trajectories in the post-Eurozone crisis decade", a new paper co-authored by Fabio Bulfone, Mischa Stratenwerth, and Arianna Tassinari, and published in Socio-Economic Review, investigates the economic trajectories of Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain in the decade following the Eurozone crisis (2010–2019).
