Linguaphone was founded in 1901 by Jacque Roston, translator and language teacher. He was one of the first pioneers to recognise the potential of sound medium, at first with wax cylinder and then with discs, for language teaching. He introduced discs in 1924, commissioning recordings to the greatest and most respected phoneticians and language specialists of the time.  Among the German course authors: Theodor Siebs, Paul Menzerath, Erich Drach, Carl Niessen, Walter Gerlach, Erich Funke, Edith Hernnstadt-Ottingen, Leo Baeck, H.P. Eiseuer.
