We will be discussing the following question:

  • Who are the Russian elites in Western countries?
  • When did they start to invest in the West and how did they manage to gain influence in Western politics and the economy? Why did Western governments low the level of penetration we see today?
  • What are the links between the Russian invasion in Ukraine and the entanglement of Russian and Western countries’ elites?
  • Can we quantify the involvement of Russian elites in the West (e.g., how much of the economy in the UK is captured by Russian and other foreign elites).
  • How do we know that this involvement has led to illicit capital flows and corruption and how much corruption is there?
  • Are the sanctions imposed on Russian elites in the UK and other Western countries effective in draining the purse that finances the Russian invasion of Ukraine?
  • What sanctions would be more effective?
