Biomimetic chemistry is addressed to the design and fabrication of new synthetic materials using the strategies adopted by living organisms to produce the biological ones.
Biogenic materials display unusual chemico-physical, mechanical and morphological properties, thanks to their texture and supramolecular structures, which are not easily reproduced through conventional methods of synthesis. As a consequence they can be regarded as ideal models for the design of complex functional materials.
The group is particularly interested to investigate the chemical and structural aspects of the biomineralization processes, as model systems for the design and development of new composite materials with possible applications as biomaterials.
